Soup tureens
A soup tureen is a soup bowl with a lid. The soup tureen was first introduced at court at the beginning of the 18th century, but it was not until almost a hundred years later that it became an integral part of tableware. The reason behind the similarity in nomenclature between this soup serving vessel and the French noble pâté is no longer evident.
What is important to note is that a soup tureen is always equipped with a lid and is not contingent on a specific shape or contents.From a practical standpoint, soup tureens of a larger size should be equipped with two handles to facilitate safe handling and transportation without risk of injury.Soup cups, soup bowls and large table tureens, each with a lid, offer a number of advantages.The soup remains hot for longer and is protected during transport.
The meaning of the word "tureen", which is used just as accurately in the catering industry as in the porcelain sector, is unclear. In the catering industry, soup bowls with lids are not referred to as soup tureens. It is curious that this term is not used.
