Silver Line
A very rare and highly intricate form of porcelain decoration is "electro-plating," also known as "platting." This involves an electrochemical process in which the fired porcelain body is coated with a metallic layer through a special galvanization process, giving it a distinct visual appeal.
In the 2010s, there was a real surge in partially and fully silver- and gold-plated tableware, but this quickly came to an end with the LFGB (German Foodstuffs and Consumer Goods Ordinance). 6 out of 10 tested items had migration values that were too high, making them unsuitable for contact with food. Many manufacturers used highly toxic chemicals for the galvanization process, which continued to release substances into hot foods and drinks even after multiple washes.
However, electroplating can also be done with relatively non-toxic salts and chemicals, which, after the galvanization process, do not release harmful foreign substances and are therefore suitable for use with food. These more environmentally friendly methods, however, are considerably more expensive than conventional galvanization, as used for metals and plastics.
The silver and gold-colored porcelain items from Holst Porzellan are only produced by employees who are specifically trained and authorized for this process. The salts and chemicals used are of the highest environmental class and are declared non-toxic.
Currently (as of 2025), we only produce a few decorative items, commemorative goods, and customer-specific OEM orders in plated porcelain. As far as items are concerned that are intended to come into contact with food or drinks, we use a very sensitive verification process to ensure their safe use as tableware.
Therefore, in this "Silver-Line" section, you will find only a very small number of decorative items that we manufacture using this special plating method in silver. Nevertheless, they are very rare and high-quality individual pieces.
