Cups Hospitalia
The Hospitalia cup is no ordinary cup, but a functional aid for bedridden and physically disabled people. The details of this cup have been specially designed for this user group. It has been used in care for more than 50 years.
The fact that this hospital cup is now threatened with extinction can only be attributed to a lack of knowledge and the prevailing cost pressure at the expense of patients. Major premium brands for hospital porcelain have already stopped producing this cup body. Holst Porzellan (as of 3/2025) is also not planning to re-produce it due to a lack of demand.
The bottom of the cup and the ring are extra wide, enabling the cup to be placed on the saucer much more securely. This is particularly important for those with limited motor skills and for patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease.
The opening of the handle is so small that you cannot put a finger through it. This ‘anti-function’ is deliberate, because people with limited motor skills tend to get stuck in a large handle when putting down cups and mugs, and then spill the hot drink in bed or on tables.
The 200ml capacity of the cup is almost exactly the midpoint between system cups (0.20-0.25 l) and ordinary cups (0.16-0.18 l). A little more volume than a cup, so that it does not have to be refilled often, and less than a mug, because in mugs, a quarter of the filling volume is usually drunk cold or not drunk at all.
Made of genuine feldspar porcelain, the cup fulfils all practical requirements for kitchen and transport and all hygienic safety requirements for patients and their environment. Perhaps this design will help to ensure that the procurement of cups and station tableware is once again more patient-oriented, because at Holst Porcelain this cup costs no more than a mug.
